During the American Revolution, soldiers from both the British and American sides carried swords into battle, necessitating the use of a shoulder cross belt. This belt, worn over one shoulder, featured a metal clip to hold the soldier's saber securely. However, when charging the enemy, soldiers often had to steady the scabbard with their left hand before drawing the sword. Additionally, many soldiers carried a canvas haversack on the opposite shoulder, creating the iconic criss-cross appearance of Revolutionary War uniforms.
