The wife of the second president of the United States and the mother of the sixth president, Abigail Adams was one of the most influential figures of America’s early history. Though women didn’t traditionally participate in political life, Adams did so through her husband. Abigail Adams’ life is one of the best documented of all of America’s First Ladies; she wrote letters to John Adams regularly. As John participated in the Continental Congresses and fought in the Revolutionary War, Abigail wrote to him and offered advice in response to his questions and concerns. Abigail and John often discussed government, politics, and other intellectual matters, and she offered incredible pieces of information that ranged from women’s rights to potential rebellions to eyewitness accounts of the home front during the war.
